ESRI (UK) in Local Government

Government initiatives, citizen expectations & the credit crunch. They all mean that more must be done, potentially with reduced resources. GIS technology from ESRI (UK) already supports activities within the majority of UK authorities. Increasingly GIS solutions are being implemented strategically, at an Enterprise level, to bring these efficiencies throughout the organisation and to help Local Government meet the challenges they face.
For example
With the vast majority of local authority data being location-based, Geographic Information Systems can be used to join up activities between colleagues, teams, departments and even whole councils - for greater efficiency, reduced duplication of effort and improved services to the public.
Geographic information underpins a vast range of authority tasks, from planning and housing, to emergency response and highways asset management. And this gives Geographic Information Systems great potential. With GIS as the common denominator, staff across an authority can eradicate duplication and siloed data - creating a single set of spatial land and property data, which can inform every single one of these tasks.
Moreover, because a single set of data can be shared through a centralised system, the authority can operate in a more ‘joined up’ manner. Staff can work together more cohesively for the first time, boosting internal efficiency, improving public service delivery and even sharing services with other departments and agencies - as specifically requested by Central Government.
This is the vision. And ESRI (UK) can help you realise it at your own pace. Because our technology is so scalable and easy to use - and because we benefit from the largest pool of GIS consultants in the UK, through our Specialist Local Government team - we can help you define a path towards more joined up working practices: one that is realistic, cost-effective and achievable.
Scenario: the joined-up authorityImagine, for example, one of your customer service operators receives a call from a member of the public about a faulty street lamp. Using GIS functionality integrated with your CRM system, the operator can quickly and easily locate the lamp and record the fault – all in a matter of seconds. It may be that the local maintenance contractor is already out on the street, dealing with another issue. Using his PDA, he will immediately receive full details of the location and nature of the fault. The contractor can then add the new repair into his schedule. Once completed, he can update the fault report, and wirelessly update the database and application. All of this means that the fault can be dealt with in a matter of hours following the original phone call. The caller will not have to be passed around departments to log the fault; the maintenance contractor doesn’t need to return to the office to pick up any new jobs; and there is no need for a confusing paper trail of documents that might be lost or inaccurately transcribed. This is the vision. ESRI (UK) can help you make it a reality. |
